Ards Borough Council
Moves to Fortnightly Bin Collection.

From June 2008 Ards Borough Council will discontinue their weekly Grey (Black) Bin collection and move to a fortnightly collection in a bid to increase the area's recycling rate. The new arrangement will mean an alternate weekly collection for Grey & Blue bins. I.e.. One week the Grey bin is collected, the following week the Blue bin is collected.
Considering most council areas have already moved to fortnightly collections, it really comes as no surprise that Ards would have no option but to eventually follow suit. From a realisation early last year that recycling targets were not being met, and in consideration of the impending threat of huge fines for the borough, the decision, in my humble opinion, was a foregone conclusion.
Latest figures would suggest that recycling still only accounts for a meagre 26% of the boroughs total waste collection tonnage. This is simply nowhere near the level of recycling required to avoid the hefty fines, not to mention the added burden to the rate payer. Personally, I fully support the decision and really hope that this new arrangement will encourage more recycling of domestic waste by everyone concerned. More importantly, I hope it will encourage consumers to choose products with the least amount of packaging and consequently get the message to producers and retailers - that whilst you may want their products, you do not want their bin fillers.
On the bright side, Ards Borough Council have a Blue Bin exchange program in place at present which will allow you to exchange your small Blue Bin for a large Blue Bin - Free of Charge. If you do not currently have recycling bins (Blue or Brown) you can contact the Councils Environmental Services Department for more information. Tel. 028 91824014.

There has to be a better way !
