At last nights committee meeting, Greyabbey & District Community Association agreed to invite a highly qualified team of cardiac Nurses to Greyabbey to teach local people the basics of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Committee members are taking the inititive by being the first to enrole on the two hour course which is hoped will take place in the near future. The course is free, takes about two hours of your time and could ultimately save the life of a loved one. The course also covers how to deal with someone who is choking. This is a common occurence in children and with training is a simple situation to deal with. Anyone interested in learning more about these life saving skills should contact the secretary here.
The Chain of Survival The British heart foundation (BHF) is the nation's heart charity. They corordinate Heartstart UK, an inititive to teach people what to do in a life threatening emergency.
Through Heartstart Uk, they aim to save lives in the community by strengthening the chain of survival. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest their life may depend on a bystander who has learned ELS skills. The trained person can recognise what has happened, call for professional help and preform CPR to buy the casualty time. In most cases a defibrillator is required to restart their heart and this needs to be applied within four minutes for the best possible chance of survival.
The Heartstart UK Course On a heartstart course you can learn vital lifesaving skills. ELS is a set of simple techniques that can keep a person alive until professional help arrives.
It includes...
- how to get help quickly
- how to recognise the warning signs of a heart attack
- how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- how to help someone who is unconscious
- how to deal with choking
- how to deal with serious bleeding

Courses require no special medical skills. They are Free and only take around two hours.
It might be the most valuable thing you'll ever learn. Because heart disease touches us all, and in the future your ELS skills may mean the difference between the life and death to a friend or a member of your family.
Through BHF funding for Heartstart UK schemes and schools across the country, and their work with community responders, the BHF has helped over a million people gain ELS skills and lives have been saved.
If BHF are to prevent more people from dying prematurely of heart disease, they need your help too.
In order to run this very worthwhile course we need to have definite numbers to attend. If you are interested please get in touch. 15/10/07 |
