Peninsula Community Network: R. Campbell informed committee that N. Cornick, M. Brown and herself attended a meeting on 24th April at Kircubbin Community Centre. On arrival Lisa Rea (EDRCN Community Development Officer) introduced Sandra Henderson (EDRCN Communications Officer) and Tom Rainey, her replacement as Low infrastructure Community Development Officer. Following a brief self introduction of persons present, attendee’s were split into two groups - information planning and strategic planning. Various topics were discussed within each group and it was interesting to discover that most of the issues raised echoed our own concerns in Greyabbey i.e. traffic, policing, infrastructure etc. etc. R. Campbell reported that some good information had been gleaned from attending and that contact with other community group members in the Peninsula had to be a positive step forward for this committee. N. Cornick admitted that he was initially sceptical as no structure existed within the group and felt that it would gain more credibility as a constituted group with principal officers. Frances Hughes (EDRCN) agreed with N. Cornick stating that for the group to be taken seriously some form of structure but not necessarily constituted at this stage, would be beneficial. The next meeting is planned for Thursday 21st June at Portavogie Community Centre.
Presentation: Unable to make suitable arrangements for this meeting. Sixties Disco: Due to circumstances beyond the control of this committee the Sixties Disco & Fancy Dress evening was cancelled. M. Brown explained that the Wildfowler was unable host the event due to a problem with the renewal of their entertainments licence. Proprietor Eric Rose apologised for the inconvenience stating that he was very disappointed that his license application was taking so long to process. N. Cornick agreed to contact the DJ and cancel the booking for the event.
Sewage Works Landscaping: Nothing to report.
Public Toilets: It was brought to committee’s attention that ABC was considering the sale of public toilets at Main Street to a property developer. R. Campbell stated that she had reliable information that council had recently spent 26k on refurbishment and upgrading to provide disabled access. D. Montgomery felt it incredible that having spent so much money on this facility that council would even consider disposing of it. Committee agreed that the public toilets are a valuable asset for the village and should be retained. Secretary to write to local councillors for more information.
Policing: Various complaints regarding the lack of policing in the village at weekends prompted concern from all committee members with underage drinking on Friday nights the main focal point. It was reported that up to 50 young people, mostly from outside the village, would descend on the village on Friday nights with carrier bags filled with their favourite tipple . With no police intervention children as young as 14 are free to parade the Main Street with drink in hand. Committee agreed that this situation is unacceptable and that the absence of adequate policing is both disconcerting for our elderly residents and subjects the young people themselves to risk, particularly young females. Committee also acknowledged that alcohol was not being supplied locally. Secretary to write to District Commander.
Youth Report: R. Campbell reported that youth activities have been keeping her extremely busy lately with the younger age group section remaining very strong. Despite all efforts it is still proving very difficult to get the older age groups on board. Various ideas including tennis and canoeing were discussed at length with P. Cornick suggesting a public meeting for the15 –18 age group to ask what they would like to see happening in the village. Frances Hughes stated that this was a widespread problem and offered help on a planning strategy commenting that funding was available through the Healthy Living/ detached youth scheme.
Other Business: Treasurer presented Event Insurance renewal for payment. (approx. £200) (prop. D. Montgomery sec. J. Davidson)
Community Newsletter: P. Cornick put forward the suggestion of a community newsletter. Frances Hughes stated that a lot of community associations were publishing newsletters with excellent results. She agreed to send some sample copies to the secretary. Committee agreed to look at this in more detail next meeting.
Notice Board: It was reported that the notice board at Kosi Korner had suffered from some minor vandalism and that the Perspex section had been pushed in. M. Brown agreed to inspect the damage and suggested a general face lift by installing a coloured fibre board backing that would enable the use of pins as opposed to the magnets used at present.
Next Meeting: Monday 11th June 2007 Monday 17th September 2007 (AGM)
