Members of
Greyabbey & District
Community Association
and a number of concerned
residents meet with
Mrs Iris Robinson (MP
MLA) and Mr
Billy Ellison (DOE
Roads) to discuss volume
of traffic through the
village. Particular
concern was
voiced at the
rate of new housing
development in the lower
Ards, the rise in traffic
levels over recent years
and the safety of primary
school children at the
school corner. Mrs
Robinson agreed that the
roads throughout the
peninsula were in need of
substantial upgrading and
that she has been
campaigning for a number
of years to get these
improvements.
Ernie
Cruikshanks, both a
governor at Greyabbey
P.S. and a
grandparent of children
attending the school,
expressed his concerns
about the lack of
willingness of Doe roads
to address the issue of
flashing lights on the
approach to the school
corner. He stated
that he had taken the
matter to Jim Shannon MLA
but despite letters
bouncing back and forth
DOE roads would
appear to
be dragging their
heels. Mr
Ellison was not
aware of this issue or
the correspondence that
Mr Cruikshanks produced
but offered
to speak to the
relevant department on
his return to the
office. The
discussion moved to the
possibility of moving the
30 mph signs further away
from the school corner
and upgrading road
markings to highlight the
schools presence.
This was regarded as a
step in the right
direction and Mr Ellison
indicated that
these modifications
could be made
relatively
quickly.
