Greyabbey to benefit from N. Ireland Housing Executive initiative to provide unlimited numbers of prefabricated one bedroom homes. 

Following a recent directive from Margaret Ritchie, Minister for social development, the NIHE has been tasked with reducing the number of single people waiting on social housing around the province. The pilot scheme, aimed at providing low cost accommodation for local people, will utilise some 500 acres of waste /unused housing executive land identified in the current housing stock around Co. Down and may include green areas or excessively large gardens.  It is anticipated that the first units will appear in Greyabbey early 2008 with prospective tenants being notified within the next few days.

April Foley (Area Co-ordinator) described the new units as a particularly clever idea which will enable single people to remain in their own locality indefinitely.  Due to the advanced modular design these units can literally be unplugged and re-sighted when and where a demand exists.  Developed in Sweden the units are environmentally friendly, come fully furnished and have an extremely low carbon footprint.  With low rental values anticipated these modern starter homes should prove very popular and dramatically reduce NIHE waiting lists.  01/04/08
